![]() His method of attack was an Archimedean summation of areas he found the volumes and centers of gravity of bodies of rotation, cylindrical ungulae, and curvilinearly defined wedges by indirect proofs. Lalouvère’s chief book is the Quadratura circuli, published in 1651, in which he drew upon the work of Charles de La Faille, Guldin, and Vincentio. That Lalouvère was on friendly terms with Fermat is evident in a series of letters he further maintained a close relationship with Pardies in France and Wallis in England. The general of the order was at that time Guldin, a mathematician who may be considered, along with Cavalieri, Fermat, Vincentio, Kepler, Torricelli, Valerio - and indeed, Lalouvère - one of the precursors of modern integral calculus. Lalouvère served as a professor of humanities, rhetoric, Hebrew, theology, and mathematics. After completing his religious training, he was ordained a priest in 1631 or 1632. On July 9, 1620, at the age of 20, Lalouvère entered the Society of Jesus in Toulouse. He is also known for his incorrect solution of Pascal's problems on the cycloid.Īntoine de Lalouvère was born on August 24, 1600, in Rieux, Haute-Garonne, France, in an aristocratic family. Petau may be found in the latter’s Petavii orationes the same work contains Petau’s refutation of Lalouvère’s views on the astronomical questions of the horizon and calculation of the calendar.Īntoine de Lalouvère was a French mathematician known as the first scientist to study the properties of the helix. In addition to these publications, Lalouvère maintained an active correspondence on mathematical subjects, several of his letters to Pascal being extant. He returned to problems concerning cycloids - including those posed by Pascal - in 1660, in Veterum geometría promota in septem de cycloide libris. Having returned to mathematics, Lalouvère went on to deal with bodies in free fall and the inaccuracies of Gassendi’s observations in Propositiones geometricae sex (1658). A second, incomplete solution to Pascal’s problems was submitted by Wallis, and on November 25, 1658, the prize committee decided not to give the award to anyone. Pascal’s allegations were without foundation Lalouvère asserted that he had reached all his conclusions independently, and became embittered, while Fermat, who might have helped to resolve the quarrel, chose instead to remain neutral. The matter might have ended there had not Pascal, in his Histoire de la roulette, accused Lalouvère of plagiarizing his solutions from Roberval. ![]() The calculation of the volumes and centers of gravity of certain parts of cycloids and of the masses formed by their rotation around an axis was central to Pascal’s problems, however he did not accept Lalouvère’s solutions, and Lalouvère himself later discovered and corrected an error in computation. Lalouvère returned his solutions to Pascal’s first two problems only ten days later, having reached them by simple proportions rather than by calculation. Lalouvère’s interest was attracted by the nature of the problems, rather than by the prize, and Fermat transmitted them to him on July 11. The prize was to be sixty Spanish gold doubloons, and solutions to the problems he set were to be submitted by the following October 1. In June 1658, Pascal made his conclusions on cycloids the subject of open competition. Indeed, he stated that he preferred to go on to easier tasks, more suited “to my advanced age.” Nonetheless, he was drawn into the dispute with Pascal for which his name is best known. Thus, Lalouvère established the volume of the body of rotation and the center of gravity of its cross-section then by simple division, he found the volume of the cross-section.īy the time he published this work, Lalouvère was teaching Scholastic theology rather than mathematics and believed that he had reached his goals as a mathematician. He was then able to proceed by inverting Guldin’s rule whereby the volume of a body of rotation is equal to the product of the generating figure and the path of its center of gravity. If you live in a shell, use Vim or Emacs to write your code and were never tempted with GitHub’s visual features, you are all set. Now every time you launch a console, it will know how to SSH properly. The easiest way to do it is directly from Terminal with Homebrew:Įxport SSH_AUTH_SOCK=$HOME/.gnupg/S.gpg-agent.ssh To set up YubiKey as a smart-card holding your PGP keys, you need first to replace your ssh-agent that comes pre-installed with macOS with a GnuPG solution. Keys written to a card can only be used in combination with a PIN code, so even if a YubiKey is stolen, a thief would not be able to authenticate directly.Once RSA keys are put on a card, they cannot be retrieved programmatically in any way.We do have our fair share of Linux users, but the instructions we offer further are for macOS only, as replacing default ssh-agent with a gpg-agent on a system level is a Mac-specific problem.Īs YubiKey already supports OpenPGP, we can use it as the OpenPGP card with all the benefits: Common security measures, like the hard drive encryption, are always in order, but with YubiKeys already being used for U2F, would not it be better to store RSA keys for SSH on them too, and off the computer? As all our employees work remotely from their private machines, contents of their ~/.ssh folders should never be allowed to leak. We also use SSH all the time: while pushing code to GitHub or accessing remote servers. Sticks and MacsĪ Mac is a computer of choice for most of us at Evil Martians. However, if you want to use your YubiKey for SSH connections, things quickly get less straightforward. ![]() Besides implementing U2F, YubiKey 4 series supports various security standards:Īuthenticating online with U2F works out of the box on Linux, macOS, and Windows and in all major browsers. There are also USB-C models for newer Macs, so you don’t need dongles. They are versatile, compact and can either be carried around on a keychain or, for smaller models, stay in the USB slot of your laptop all the time. There is a number of vendors that sell USB keys, and we chose Yubico and their YubiKey 4 series. The attacker needs to physically get a hold of your USB key, which is still a security risk, but in an entirely different domain. The advantages of a hardware solution are obvious: a possibility of a remote attacker gaining access to one of your tools is pretty much eliminated. Authenticating with U2F is already supported by major browsers (the only notable exception, sadly, is Safari) and you can use it with many online services that software professionals use daily: Google and Gmail, Dropbox, GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Nextcloud, Facebook, and the list goes on. Now, instead of confirming your access with some code, you need to insert a USB stick into your computer, press the physical button on it, and the device will take care of the rest. You probably have at least few of those in your pockets: phone SIM, bank cards, various IDs and the like. Known as Universal 2nd Factor (U2F) and originally developed by Yubico and Google, it relies on physical devices (usually USB or NFC) that implement cryptographic algorithms on a chip, similar to smart cards that have been around for ages. So, can we do better? There exists an open authentication standard that aims to both strengthen and simplify 2FA. Opting for an app like Google Authenticator is more secure, but can also be compromised, at least in theory, if a smartphone that runs it is precisely targeted by an attacker. Cellular networks, however, are not the safest place: messages and calls can be intercepted. By default, it involves requesting one-time access codes either by SMS/phone call or through a dedicated smartphone app. We have enforced 2FA across all our staff for all the tools that we use daily: email, GitHub, task trackers, and others. If you haven’t set up your YubiKey yet, this is a good place to start. Even without hardware keys, it makes an attacker’s job much harder than it used to be. The most obvious way to increase security is to opt for two-factor authentication (2FA) that is widely supported. A good old password, even coupled with a password manager, does not cut it anymore. In a hostile environment of the modern web, though, it is easier said than done. ![]() Our clients trust us with their source code and, even more importantly, with access to their production servers, and this trust cannot be broken. With more employees and more clients, there is a demand for stronger security. ![]() If some of those acronyms seem unfamiliar-read on for more background.Įvil Martians are growing. In fact, I’d go as far as saying that there are only two minor bosses that are particularly satisfying to defeat, as they don’t follow the same pattern as all the others. If they have short range attacks they hang out inches from your face, if they have projectiles they’ll be a short distance away, but they rarely can do both. Sadly, this underutilized aspect is also true of the enemies who tend to camp in their area depending on which of the two attacks they’ve been given. A slow-motion feature could easily have been integrated to allow highlight-reel sword slashing with existing abilities such as the running dive along the ground and the chi-blast, but instead, and in another example of taking away any control and satisfaction from the player, it’s another of the prior-mentioned ‘finishing weapons’ that receives the benefit. The enemies in the game are divided into henchman or minor bosses with the weaker ones easily dispatched with your sword and revolver, and the minor bosses better suited to your more powerful, but less satisfying weapons.įurthermore, these super weapons expose the inability of the battle system to achieve anything impressive or requiring any kind of skill. Don’t shoot the bunnies or else a bunny monster will come after you. Sadly, these seconds-long interjections are far too awesome for their own good, as they highlight the imbalance of your permanent weapons. Helping you deal with the quick build-up of enemies are temporary – but admittedly hilarious – ‘finishing weapons’, which are removed from the body of the enemy and are used to unleash hell upon your foes – such as a blackhole, a homing eyeball that shoots lasers and a Gatling gun that shoots fireworks. For some this will be enough, but it could have been so much better. Unfortunately, SW3 actually ends up too streamlined, leaving only enough room for some average gory kills and the odd quick-witted comment. Interestingly, the Shadow Warrior series has gotten shorter with each new entry – in this instance removing Multiplayer, New Game+, and all other extra features – which you’d assume would mean that the developer has been working away to perfect the formula – addition by subtraction, if you will. ![]() Some of the visuals that game provides are quite stunning. The only other real gameplay element, the grapple hook sections, are used to transport you from one battle to the next, but take up far too high a percentage of the gameplay and is seemingly artificially extended for inane character interactions. This essentially means that when the game starts to overcrowd these small platforms with waves of enemies there are few ways to enjoy it. The gun/swordplay is relatively decent – allowing for bloodspurting goodness in any given moment – but the battlefields are often far too small and poorly-designed, forcing the action into a box unfit for purpose. What the befalls the game though is a linear structure that devours any chance for anything unique (bar killable rabbits that spawn bad guys with rabbit ears) as cutscenes, battles and grapple hook sections robotically repeat themselves without improving, making the gameplay incredibly predictable. Call me crazy, but after being whipped-up in a giddy euphoria from playing around with the dismembering swordplay, I was half expecting to be able to add SW3 to my list of favourite games of 2022. It shouldn’t have been this way though, as the Doom-esque blasting and Deadpool-like humour combined with stunning environments that has you scaling mountains and cliff faces, running through bamboo forests and admiring Chinese/Japanese temples, starts the player off impressed and raring to go. So, whether you're interested in learning about the business metrics Jake relied upon to know when to hire, why Jake charges a flat annual a fee so clients don't have to deal with constant fee changes, or why Jake decided to niche-focus from the launch of his firm, then we hope you enjoy this episode of the Financial Advisor Success podcast, with Jake Northrup. He also shares why he feels fulfilled in how he consciously built and staffed his practice because it allows him to have more flexibility and time to spend with his wife and start a family, while also creating an environment for his employees to thrive and be present for their families, lives, and helps his clients enjoy their money and pursue their passions now instead of waiting for retirement. We also discuss why Jake and his team not only create long-term financial plans for their clients, but also focus on a 10-year vision to help his younger, travel-loving clientele start achieving more of their immediate goals so they're more likely to retain as clients by feeling like they're making near-term financial planning progress.Īnd be certain to listen to the end, where Jake shares how he's struggled over the years with perfectionism, control, and a fear of failure that led him to remain a solo advisor, yet realized that by focusing on those issues, he was potentially missing out on more, how Jake invested heavily to get his CFA early in his career and in retrospect wishes he spent more time learning about life planning and money scripts. We discuss how Jake attributes much of his fast-growth success to launching with an $8,000 website that focuses on his values-based niche of "travel-loving young families that don’t buy into the traditional '9-5, work-until-you-are-65' concept" and then leveraging on Google reviews to enhance his SEO, the way Jake stuck to and didn't compromise his niche from the very start when he launched but was more flexible about the financial criteria early on and only started setting higher fee minimums after his 1st year in the business. We also talk about why despite being a CFA charterholder Jake outsources investment management to First Ascent – for which clients pay an entirely separate additional fee – because it both allows him to simplify compliance to not manage investments in-house, and takes away the cost pressure of having to hire a separate employee to just manage clients' investment portfolios. ![]() ![]() In this episode, we talk in-depth about why Jake decided to hire an associate and then a lead advisor within the first few years of what was originally intended to be a solo practice because he felt his practice was too completely dependent on him, how Jake and his team implement a 4-meeting financial planning process that includes creating a life planning timeline, using MindMeister to develop a mind map to visualize a client’s goals, and creating a client dashboard in MeisterTask where clients can track their progress as well as mark off tasks that need to be completed to move them along their financial journey. What's unique about Jake, though, is how he’s been able to grow to over $550,000 of revenue in just 4 years since launching from scratch, and how he realized that because of how his rapid growth was going to impact future capacity and time constraints, he would need to hire employees sooner rather than later… and decided to hire an associate advisor in the 2nd year after launching his firm before he even had $200,000 of annual revenue. Unless, of course, you're a "politically correct" sissy like so many commentators here. The film is worth watching for someone interested in a "study" of a nun's internal repressions and how they affect her view of the outer world (you are never quite sure if the events are happening or if she is deluded) but for anyone expecting some kind of feast of debauchery, ya better forget it. The film moves slowly, the nudity is brief (and the protagonist's body is not exactly a knockout), the effects, though cheap, are well done, the one brief scene of lesbianism is almost arousing, and that's about it. just to make the nun look even more lecherous. ![]() ![]() There's no child seduction in this film, unless you consider a mildly attractive nun trying to seduce an shy and timid teenage boy who unrealistically rejects her purely for plot's sake, i.e. As far as "child seduction," well, here we have the reason why these films are so trumped up: modern day, brow-beaten, "politically correct" types who'll get their feathers ruffled at pretty much anything. The last part is a given, but then again heresy committed by a nun is not exactly a tall order. I didnt get to see this until now on YouTube which retained the original HBO. Another reviewer here says the main character (the nun who falls from grace) engages in "lesbianism, child seduction and heresy." Well, the first part is true, for what that's worth. Willie arrived with the four other chimpanzees owned by Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation. Here is his story below and more about other residents who came from the entertainment industry to PPI. Willie still runs away in fear when he sees cameras. One of the chimps, Willie, the star of the film, is still alive and cared for 27 years later at our sanctuary. Primarily Primates prepared to build a new enclosure for $65,000, but the film company offered just $35,000, so it took some time until enough funds came in and all five could be accommodated. He led the crusade to bring the chimps to PPI, and blasted the AHA, which defended the trainers and denied the abuse, giving their “no animals were harmed” seal of approval. When the filming ended, Twentieth Century Fox planned to sell the chimpanzees to a laboratory-a reprehensible irony as the lucrative film focused on a young chimpanzee’s escape from radiation tests in an Air Force laboratory.ĭon Barnes, a sensible technical advisor for the studio, warned Twentieth Century Fox of the public outcry likely to follow a transfer of the chimpanzees to a lab. In 1986 five chimpanzee stars of the film Project X were brought to Primarily Primates after a lawsuit against the film’s producers alleged abuse of the chimps by their trainers. While the concept is sound, it is not pleasing a significant number of vets out there. We implemented the mentor matches to support and reward veterans who give a helping hand to the players new to Spacelords. ![]() This topic is related to the previous one. We keep working on fine-tuning this system and improving the user experience. It is entirely possible for a low-level player who recently joined the game to achieve a high MMR if he or she is skilled enough, having to face and Antagonist with a superior While Forge Level. Ideally, Spacelords matches players with compatible MMR, independently of their character level. Again, we keep working to minimize their impact. In an ideal world, matchmaking would flawlessly match players with absolute precision, and the system is designed to function with that goal in mind, but in real life time zones, geographical zones and connection speeds might affect the experience. Until we reach that sweet spot, though, we currently have new players mixed with dedicated veterans. We believe that, as more players enter the game, players will be better stratified between low, mid and high levels. These new users are very important for the future of game, and in time they will develop their skills and become really good players. With the new F2P model we have welcomed thousands of new players. MercurySteam notes that it will be providing "exclusive, top-quality game content" to those players that have previously paid for one or more campaigns, and that it will have more information on this "in the coming days".Welcome to the first State of the Game address. "We've answered our community and hope this removal of any payment barriers will build our devoted community further". "Our vision is to see our game enjoyed by millions of users for years to come and putting all of the game's rich content into their hands for free is the way to realize it," said Álvarez of Raiders of the Broken Planet's change in direction. However, this "didn't work as we planned". The idea, director Enric Álvarez explained as part of today's announcement, was that this price point "would open it up to a large number of users". Raiders of the Broken Planet launched in August last year on PC, Xbox One, and PS4, with a pricing model that charged £9.99 per multi-mission campaign - three of which (Alien Myths, Wardog Fury, and Hades Betrayal) have been released so far.
